Our Whanganui City College Hub provides three interconnected class spaces for our secondary school-aged learners. Located in the heart of the school, these spaces give our students a variety of learning options while remaining closely connected.
Our Arahunga School Vision and Values are woven through everything we do. Visitors to our hub are encouraged to view our whakapapa wall as they walk down the corridor before entering our classrooms. Our friendly, dedicated staff work collaboratively with high expectations, a strong work ethic, and plenty of laughter. We value whanaungatanga, building strong relationships with learners, their wh?nau, and our host kura, Whanganui City College.
We run a targeted literacy programme every morning for two hours, followed by a hands-on numeracy programme using Numicon resources. Learning is carefully planned to meet each learner’s individual needs. Wherever possible, our tamariki are included alongside the mainstream whānau, participating in Art, Physical Education, Music, Dance, and joining the school canteen at lunchtime.
Afternoon sessions provide learners with choice and opportunities to explore their passions, including Boys’ and Girls’ Gymnastics, Special Olympics Basketball and Athletics, Sailing, and Swimming at the Splash Centre. Whole-class excursions also bring classroom learning to life.
Nga Ara o Arahunga WCC is a specialised programme for our 18+ trainees, based on VISA (Vocational, Independence, Social, and Aspirations) guidelines. Trainees develop life skills through practical experiences, such as weekly visits to La Nuova laundromat, and social outings to Barracks Bar and Restaurant, where they practise ordering meals using communication devices and money management.
Vocational pathways are identified through whānau IEP hui. Trainees gain social and workplace skills through volunteer work at St John’s Op Shop and new life skills projects, including lawn mowing and car grooming, helping them develop practical skills and independence.
