We have both our Transition class and our Base Senior students who share the Poynter Place site.
1. Transition Class – Preparing Our Young Adults for Life Beyond School
Our Transition Class supports learners from approximately 17 years and over, offering a rich and meaningful Vocational, Independence, Social and Aspirations (VISA) curriculum. This vibrant learning space focuses on developing the skills, confidence and experiences our taitamariki (young adults) need to take their next steps beyond school.
At Transition, we place high value on whanaungatanga. By nurturing strong, positive relationships, we help our young adults build a secure sense of identity, belonging and connection.
Our programme has a strong foundation in ng? mahi toi (the arts). Creativity is expressed through arts and crafts, film-making, singing, musical productions, band, kapa haka, music creation and dance. Alongside this, we offer a dynamic sports programme with an emphasis on connecting with the wider community.
These programmes form a rich raranga – a woven tapestry of experiences and connections that strengthen the Taha hinengaro (mental wellbeing) and Taha wh?nau (social wellbeing) of our students.
Taitamariki also develop practical life skills to support their independence in adulthood. These include cooking, functional maths, functional literacy, social communication, personal hygiene, and health and physical fitness. Arahunga School provides a clear and purposeful Transition Pathway that guides students from the time they enter the programme through to graduation.
Together, these experiences shape a strong, future-focused pathway that reflects our school values of He tangata and T? Rangatira, empowering our tauira to know who they are, stand strong, and make decisions for themselves.
2. Base Senior Class
Our Base Senior Class supports a small group of secondary-aged students who benefit from a highly personalised programme. Learning is carefully balanced between academic skill development and meaningful, hands-on life experiences.
Students engage in a strong “education in the community” approach, allowing them to practise managing themselves, navigating social interactions, and building confidence in real-world settings.
While learners work on individualised programmes tailored to their specific strengths and needs, they also have opportunities to join appropriate group activities with our Transition Class. This provides a flexible balance between personalised learning and supported social participation.
